Mouth Rinses

The Food and Drug Administration classifies mouth rinses into two categories - therapeutic and cosmetic.

In general, therapeutic rinses with fluoride have been shown to actually fight cavities, plaque and gingivitis.

On the other hand, cosmetic rinses merely treat breath odor, reduce bacteria and/or remove food particles in the mouth. They do nothing to treat or prevent gingivitis.

People who have difficulty brushing (because of physical difficulties such as arthritis) can benefit from a good therapeutic mouth rinse.

Caution: Even rinses that are indicated to treat plaque or cavities are only moderately effective. In fact, regular rinsing with water and use of good quality fluoride toothpaste are just as or more effective.

What Our Patients Say About Us

  • "Met Dr. Zheng Wang this week, followed by my wife’s appointment last week with Dr. Wang’s husband, Dr. Meng Tong. Both doctors were very friendly; professional — supported by an efficient and pleasant office staff, whom we’ve come to know & depend-on for years. Everybody at Smile Dental works hard to accommodate your unique needs & satisfaction. My dental hygienist, Heather, always does a super job, too — great cleaning; important advice about everyday care!"

  • "Due to a dental emergency, I met Dr. Tong yesterday, and he was very kind and professional. He thoroughly explained what he could do to help me with my tooth and also the long-term outlook for the repair. The office staff has always been helpful and friendly, and they keep the office running smoothly."
